Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

As we enter the new year of 2021, we are, unfortunately still plagued with issues of 2020, mainly the COVID-19 virus. The Ho'ike Hawai'i Hula Competition 2021 is currently scheduled for July 24-25, 2021. However, we are in discussion at this time as to whether or not we will proceed with this event. The COVID-19 pandemic is still much a part of our lives and we are keeping close attention to the direction the virus is trending to. Here in Florida, the numbers of infected individuals are increasing, along with more deaths occurring each day, especially in Orange County. Our concern is what's best for all and that everyone is healthy and not subject to any possibility of infection. As soon as we make a final decision to hold this event, or not, we will post it on our website and send out an email blast and Facebook notification. We appreciate and love all of you, our Ho'ike Hawai'i 'Ohana, and look forward to the day we can all be together again to celebrate the Spirit of Aloha safely!

A hui hou ame malama pono,

Virtual Hōʻike Hāwaiʻi 2020

Hōʻike Hawaiʻi will be holding a virtual hōʻike on 08/02/20

Aloha kākou!

We hope that this message finds you and your loved ones well. Due to the pandemic and cancellation of our event, we will be holding a virtual hōʻike on August 2nd, 2020.

The Virtual Hōʻike will be a showcase for any Polynesian dance group that wish to share videos of their dance or music with the Hōʻike ʻOhana while we navigate through these trying times.  This hōʻike will be open to all dancers, musicians, and vendors.  This is not a competition, but an event to bring us back together through Polynesian dance and music via social media.  We will set up an event on the Hōʻike Hāwaiʻi Facebook page for all who wish to “attend”.

Details and rules as follows:

  • All social distancing rules must be followed.  If your group is submitting a video, you are expected to be socially distanced or wearing masks to follow your state’s/county’s regulations.

  • Groups may enter up to 3 entries under the following categories- Hawaiian Hula, Tahitian, Samoan, and Maori.

  • Music/drum beats may be pre-recorded and costuming is optional, but encouraged.

  • Each entry must be under 5 minutes.

  • All entries must be submitted via shared album to kehaawahine83@gmail.com.  They will be best translated if recorded on an iPhone.  Please send the videos no later than July 31st.

  • Dancers/musicians: Please send the total list of entries, mele, name of hālau or dance group, Kumu/Ra’atira name via email to kehaawahine83@gmail.com for the virtual program.

  • Vendors:  Please have photos and/or videos of your products, the prices, and contact information ready to post to a shared album on the Hōʻike Facebook Page.

To be respectful of the organizer’s time, this hōʻike is for GROUP dances, however, we will allow a limited amount of soloists on a first come/first serve basis as long as the dancer is not already a part of a dance group.

If you have any questions please contact Keawe Smith at kehaawahine83@gmail.com. or contact Jet for technical support at jetbelleza@mac.com.

Aloha nui,
Hōʻike Hāwaiʻi Staff
